Sometimes caregiving arrives gradually. Sometimes it lands overnight — a fall, a diagnosis, a hospital discharge — and suddenly you're responsible for someone else's daily wellbeing. If that's where you are, take a breath. You don't have to solve everything at once. Here's a calm first-week checklist to get your footing.

1. Get the medications straight

Start here, because it's the highest-stakes and most easily muddled. Make one accurate list of every medication — name, dose, and when it's taken — and confirm it against the actual bottles and any discharge instructions. This becomes your anchor for everything else.

2. Gather the key documents and contacts

Locate the essentials: insurance information, a list of doctors and pharmacies, and any legal or medical directives that already exist. You don't need to become an expert overnight — just know where things are and who to call.

3. Map the daily and weekly needs

Write out what a typical day and week actually require: medications and mealtimes, appointments, mobility help, household tasks. Seeing it on paper turns a vague sense of "so much" into a concrete, shareable list.

4. Build your care team early

You will not be able to do this alone indefinitely, and you shouldn't try. Identify who can help — siblings, other family, friends, professional caregivers — and bring them in now, while you're setting things up, rather than after you're exhausted.

Be kind to yourself: nobody starts out knowing how to do this. Getting organized in the first week is about reducing chaos, not achieving perfection.

5. Put it all in one shared place

The fastest way to feel in control is to stop holding everything in your head. A shared hub like Carelyn lets you capture the medications, tasks, schedule, and notes in one place from day one — and invite your care team in, so you're organized and supported from the start.
